As a functional dietitian, I often recommend functional lab testing and dietary supplements as a key part of finding and addressing the root cause of illness. Using one or both help in providing individualized plans. I like to compare this to throwing darts, if you have not been tested we typically are “throwing darts in the dark” and trying to get to a root cause that may not be whereas adding testing can help us “light up the dartboard” and get to the underlying cause much more efficiently.
I use a “food first” approach and rely on food as medicine as my primary treatment. I try to be mindful of when recommending a test or supplement, however there is no requirement for testing or supplementation to work with me.
Here is some basic information on tests and supplements I use.
Hormone testing can be slightly tricky to get accurate data on. Typically, I use the gold standard of functional hormone testing by Precision Analytical called the Dutch test. I also use other options from ZRT and Genova Diagnostics.
Functional stool testing can be helpful in quantifying many things such as dysbiosis, yeast or parasite infection, malabsorption, gut permeability (leaky gut) among others. I use GI map from Diagnostic Solutions and GI effects from Genova Diagnostics.
SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) is prevalent in IBS and GERD. I use the SIBO breath test from Genova Diagnostics. Other tests may include labs, genetic testing or environmental exposure.
The dietary supplement industry is not well regulated. When purchasing a supplement from Amazon or a store shelf there is a high risk that
There are many choices for high quality and effective dietary supplements which can be essential to treating a variety of medical conditions. I mainly use Fullscript or Wholescript dispensaries. These dispensaries scrutinize the supplements prior to adding to their catalog ensuring that they are, indeed, high quality and third party tested.
When you choose to work with me, I may provide recommendations for added supplements as part of your treatment plan. We then reassess supplementation as needed.
This is just a brief overview of the testing available when working with me. If you have Questions, please feel free to contact me to set up a free discovery call.
